At the Rookie level, players take their first steps into tackle football with a modified 8-player format designed to maximize learning, safety, and confidence.
Rookie football introduces players to the fundamentals of full-contact football in a supportive, age-appropriate environment, setting the foundation for future success at higher levels.
What to Expect
8-player tackle football on a reduced-width field
Modified rules to encourage skill development and safety
Minimum play requirements to guarantee game experience for all players
Certified coaches who teach the game the right way: fundamentals, sportsmanship, and Trojan Tough values
Key Skills We Teach
Safe blocking and tackling techniques
Basic offensive and defensive formations
Ball handling, positioning, and field awareness
Communication, teamwork, and sportsmanship
Practices and Games
Practices begin the week of August 1st
Players must complete 10 practices before participating in their first game
Games are played on a modified field with 10-minute quarters
Certified EMTs are present at all games
Arrive 45 minutes before kickoff for games
Equipment
All Rookie players must wear:
Helmet (NOCSAE-certified)
Shoulder pads
Thigh, knee, hip, and tailbone pads
Mouthguard (colored, not clear)
Rubber molded cleats (no metal spikes)
Equipment will be distributed at Packard Field on Sunday, July 27, 2025 at 6:00 PM.
Additional Expectations
Players must maintain good behavior and academic performance at school.
Players will wear their jerseys to school on Fridays before games to show team spirit.
Weather policy: Games are played in all conditions except thunder and lightning.
